1. Small lined backyard ponds 

The small backyard sized ponds are typically gold fish or koi ponds and water gardens.

This type of pond typically has a bio-filter and or a waterfall, and thus, are well aerated. However these beloved ponds are frequently chocked full of cute greedy finned beggars that are amply fed by their adoring owners. If water is expensive, frequent water changes may not be feasible.

These ponds suffer from both an over abundance of nutrients as well as a build up of organic materials and minerals.  

It is practical to both manage the pond water quality and add cultured bacteria to make your pond flourish.

2. Small Earthen ponds (up to 1/2 acre)

 

In the small earthen backyard and storm water management type ponds, the issues are typically excessive nutrients from storm water runoff. This source of water can be more contaminated than sewage.

 

These ponds typically do not have bio filters, waterfalls or aerators.

 

The combination of the high nutrient inflow and low oxygen, make these very challenging to manage.  

 

Manage pH and Total Alkalinity:

The best approach is to make sure the pH is above 7.5 and the total alkalinity above 100 mg/l to favor beneficial bacteria growth. Use Microbe-lift 5-in-1Test Stripsto test and Limestone or Baking Soda to correct if needed.

 Larger ponds near electrical connections can consider a pond aerator.

3. Large Earthen Ponds:

In large earthen ponds, excessive nutrients enter not only from fish waste but also waterfowl, storm water runoff from livestock and crop fields, even rainwater.

 

These ponds are best managed by making them beneficial bacteria friendly and aerating if possible.  

 

Manage pH and Total Alkalinity:

Monitor pH and Total Alkalinity with Microbelift 5-in-1 Test Strips.

Adjust as needed with limestone or bulk baking soda. 

A pH above 7.5 and Total Alkalinity above 100mg/l is a good goal.
