Natural filters use aquatic plants:
  •  to uptake nutrients,
  • provide surface area for bacteria to colonize and
  • mechanically filter particles on their roots.
  • Does not include pump or plants

 Natural Filters

  • The movement of water across plant roots in a natural filter encourages increased nutrient consumption leaving less nutrients available for pea-soup algae to thrive.
  • As the water enters the filter the pressure is greatly reduced allowing solids to settle out and collect on the exposed roots of the plants, thereby removing sediment from the pond.
  • Additionally, the tremendous surface area created by the roots of the plants provides a fertile are for beneficial bacteria growth providing biological filtration, as well.
  • A natural filter need only be 10% of the pond surface area to be effective.
  • The 16" Sundial Islands can be placed in all of the Natural Filters (see the Floating Islands/Floating Island Planters section).
