Works best in water over 50 degrees F. and at Total Alkalinities of 100 or better USING BAGGED STRAW: 1. How does it work? Barley straw works by fostering large cultures of colorless, odorless, harmless, bacteria that help keep your pond clean and clear. No toxics here. Barley straw is safe for fish, plants, snails, frogs, kids, dogs, livestock, songbirds, pesky herons, etc. Barley straw also boosts overall biofilter capacity by increasing surface areas (nests) for native beneficial bacteria. The bacterial growth on the barley straw natually retards the growth of many green algae including string algae ( hair algae ), also called pond moss and when floating on the surface, pond scum. 2. Will it work in my pond? Barley straw works in both still water ponds and re-circulating water ponds. Less straw is needed where there is recirculation of water. We have found that it is most effective when the pH is above 7.5. 3. How do you install Straw? Remove mesh bag from plastic bag. If the pond is less than 3 feet deep, just toss in pond. If there is one particular spot where you want to secure the bag, see 5 below. 4. When is the best time to put straw in my pond? Barley straw may be placed in the pond at any time during the year. Once applied, barley straw should be maintained in the pond throughout the entire year. Maintaining straw in the pond thru the winter months will minimize the perennial early spring algae bloom. 5. Where is the best place to put straw in my pond? Place the barley straw where the greatest volume of water will come in contact with, and wash through the straw. Anchor by the end clips if necessary. Above or below waterfalls, fountains, and filter discharges works great. (Use two anchors if trying to locate in a visible flow area such as above or below a water fall.) Bags will float for several weeks with no additional floatation and then will sink. As long as your pond is no deeper than 3 feet, the bag can rest on the bottom of the pond. If the pond is deeper than 3 feet, float or attach bag no more than 3 feet below the surface of the water. To put IN FILTER BOX, remove from plastic bag, place uncompressed mesh bag in box after the first set of mechanical screens to minimize sediment accumulation on straw. 6. Most cost effective and its chemical free February 14, 2009 Reviewer: Linda Fields from Westminster, MD United States   These neat easy to use little bags of barley straw are worth their weight in gold for watergardens, koi and goldfish ponds.  A best seller for 9 years.   OK, maybe I'm baised as I own Still Pond Farm, but customer loyalty tells me this one is a winner.
