Description   Also known as Azolla.   Features Azolla caroliniana - Fairy Moss Fairy Moss ZONE 8 - Attractive green and red floating fern. Tiny leaves. Koi love to eat this plant. Aggressive if fish are not present. Restrictions: None An easy way to add plants and boost the bio capacity to your pond: Needs no pot, floats on the water surface Grows rapidly Produces lush green / red leaves Grows small dangling root system that absorbs nutrients from the water column helping to quell algae growth Root system provides extensive surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria Harvesting excess nutrients from your pond is as easy as raking out extra plants periodically throughout the season and tossing them on your compost pile. Fish love to nibble the nutritious roots (in the presence of large fish, plants may need protection in our Safe Havens) Grow as an annual in northern states (Killed by heavy frost, replace annually) Can be contained in one section of your pond with our Plant Corrals. Shade water to keep it cooler in the summer Provide shelter for fish.
